freezr will make it easy to set up your own personal server and to run javascript apps on it.

It takes just a couple of minutes to set up and run your personal server on this cloud-based alpha version.

You can also install freezr yourself in just a few minutes on any cloud service that work with node.js, such as Heroku, Google Could, AWS, Microsoft Azure, and Openshift, or just on your own PC or mac laptop. (Instructions here.)

freezr is CEPS-compatible.

What ? ? ... What is freezr?

freezr provides a thin layer of functionality on top of node.js so that you can easily connect to a file system and database of your choosing - effectively your personal data store. freezr provides a simple login and a permissioning system so you can share data between apps and users - the default of course being that only YOU can access your own data and each app can only access its own data.

Since node.js can run on almost any platform, so does freezr. Freezr is platform agnostic so you can run it on windows or mac or build your own server in the cloud on Heroku, or Amazon’s AWS, and even use your Dropbox or Google Drive as your personal file system and database.

Data freedom

With freezr, your data isn’t stored on other people’s servers – your data and apps are fully under your control in a file system and database of your choosing.

When it grows up, freezr wants to be your “personal data store and server” - a place when you can keep all your personal data privately, under your own full control - and your own open “app platform” - similar in concept to smart phones, where you can have a number of apps, and give them permission to access your data, to analyze it, visualize it or mash it up in some new way.

So freezr is also an experiment in data freedom - suggesting a way to free our personal data from the silos created by traditional web architecture and mobile platforms.

It is fully open source, and all freezr apps are necessarily open source, as they are written in (client-side) javascript.

You can read more about data freedom and the concept of freezr here.

Caveat Molitor

LAST BUT NOT LEAST, freezr is a personal project - a proof of concept, which is not production ready.

Warning: If you have any sense of code esthetics, you may experience severe aches and possible trauma, should you venture to browse the code base.

Yet, I have been running my own freezr since 2014, using it to take notes, and to manage my web browsing history, and to run my my own personal freezr to post blogs and links. And this site is running on freezr, using a simple web page builder.
